Scripture Live vs ProPresenter: an honest comparison for churches

Scripture Live vs ProPresenter: an honest comparison for churches

TL;DR
– ProPresenter is best-in-class for media-heavy production; Scripture Live is best for live verse detection + streaming-first workflows.
– Different shapes of product for different shapes of church — not a winner-takes-all comparison.
– Pricing in GHS, Twi bundled, Mobile Money supported, free tier permanent.

If you’re shopping for church projection software in 2026, ProPresenter is almost certainly on your shortlist. It’s been the industry standard in the United States for over a decade, it’s used by some of the largest churches in the world, and it has a polished media production stack that nobody else really matches.

Scripture Live is a newer entrant. It’s also a different shape of product — built around live detection of scripture from sermon audio, with streaming integration as a first-class output and a permanent free tier. People have started asking us how the two compare, so this article is a fair head-to-head: what each tool is good at, where each one falls short, and which churches should pick which.

A note up front: we make Scripture Live, so we’re not neutral. But we have a lot of respect for ProPresenter — it solves real problems for real churches — and we’d rather give you an clear comparison than try to win an argument we’ll lose if you actually demo both products. The Scripture Live vs ProPresenter question doesn’t have a single right answer; it depends on what your service looks like.

What ProPresenter is great at

We’ll say this without hedging: ProPresenter is the best media production tool in the church-tech market.

  • Slide production at depth. Multi-element slides with backgrounds, foreground graphics, animated text, scripture overlays, lower thirds, countdown timers. The slide editor is deep and powerful.
  • Video playback and rendering. Smooth playback, multiple simultaneous video layers, transitions between video and slides without dropping frames.
  • Multi-screen and multi-output presets. Stage display for the worship team, lyrics on the in-room projector, a different feed on the lobby screens, all configured per service. ProPresenter handles complex multi-output setups that few other tools attempt.
  • Massive song library and CCLI integration. Industry-standard CCLI reporting, broad song database, lyrics templates that have been refined over many releases.
  • Mature ecosystem. Plugins, integrations, third-party themes, a substantial community of operators who already know it.

If you’ve got a production team running a multi-screen, multi-camera service with deep media needs — countdowns, sermon bumpers, animated lower thirds, live cameras switched between scenes — ProPresenter is built for that scale. It earned its reputation.

What ProPresenter doesn’t do

There are also some straight gaps, and they’re the gaps that motivated us to build Scripture Live.

  • No live scripture detection from sermon audio. ProPresenter’s scripture module is a search tool. The operator types a reference, hits enter, and the verse appears. It’s a faster keyboard. The fundamental bottleneck — operator listening to the pastor and typing — hasn’t moved. (Correction welcome: if ProPresenter ships these features in a release we haven’t reviewed, email us and we’ll update this article.)
  • No bundled Twi or African-language Bibles. ProPresenter ships with mainstream English translations. Adding Twi, Yoruba, Swahili, or Akan is either a manual import job or simply not supported, depending on the version. For Twi-speaking churches the gap is real.
  • Limited native streaming-first browser-source output. You can route ProPresenter’s output to OBS via screen capture or via NDI in the higher tiers, but it isn’t designed around the OBS browser-source workflow that streaming-only churches use today.
  • No free tier with full feature surface. ProPresenter’s free version is feature-limited. Scripture Live’s free tier ships KJV + Twi + reference search + phrase search + custom slides + projector + OBS feed; the only paid feature gated behind a sign-in is live detection.
  • Pricing primarily in USD; Mobile Money support unclear. Buying ProPresenter from Ghana, Nigeria, or Kenya means a card transaction in USD. For churches that operate on Mobile Money / Paystack rails, that’s a friction layer.

These aren’t dealbreakers for every church; they’re dealbreakers for certain shapes of church.

What Scripture Live does that ProPresenter doesn’t

Three things, specifically.

Live detection from sermon audio. Scripture Live listens to the sermon through a microphone or audio interface, transcribes it in real time, and recognises Bible references the moment they’re spoken — including paraphrases. This runs through a three-layer detection pipeline: a Pattern Layer (under fifty milliseconds, on-device) for direct references, a Semantic Layer (100-300ms, on-device) using neural verse search for paraphrases, and a Reasoning Layer (1-3s, cloud) for the hardest cases. The first two can auto-display when confident; the third always queues for one-click operator approval.

The full technical story, in non-technical language, is in the live detection article. The practical takeaway is that a fast-paced or improvisational pastor doesn’t outpace the operator anymore — the verse is on screen before the operator could have finished typing.

Per-feed OBS / vMix browser sources. Scripture Live runs two independent local browser-source feeds from launch: one for scripture (localhost:5544) and one for lyrics (localhost:5545). Streaming teams add them to OBS scenes as Browser Sources. Sermon scene shows scripture; worship scene shows lyrics. No screen-capture, no NDI tier upgrade, no operator coordination across two apps. This is genuinely uncommon — most projection tools weren’t designed around the streaming-first workflow.

Bundled Twi Bible in the free installer. Twi (Akan) is included in every install, free tier and up. Not a paid add-on, not a download-on-first-launch, not a manual import. It’s there because we built the product in Ghana and a meaningful share of our users preach in Twi or in mixed Twi/English.

What ProPresenter does that Scripture Live doesn’t

Equally plain in the other direction.

  • Heavy slide production. Scripture Live’s custom slides are deliberately simple — text and image slides, three image fit modes, theme-driven typography. We don’t try to be a layout app. ProPresenter has a real slide editor with multi-element composition.
  • Video rendering and complex media. Scripture Live doesn’t play video. If your service needs a sermon bumper, an offering video, or a baptism reel, ProPresenter handles that natively; Scripture Live doesn’t.
  • Multi-screen presets at depth. You can drive multiple displays from Scripture Live, but the configuration model is simpler than ProPresenter’s stage-display + lobby-screen + main-projector preset system.
  • Full media management. Asset libraries, themed templates, song databases at scale, version-controlled service plans. ProPresenter’s media management is mature in ways Scripture Live deliberately isn’t trying to match.

We’re not building a ProPresenter clone. We’re building a different product that does specific things ProPresenter doesn’t.

Pricing comparison

Different shapes of pricing, worth comparing carefully.

ProPresenter (as of 2026, subject to change — verify on their site):
– ProPresenter 7 retail license is around USD $399 lifetime per machine, with per-major-version upgrades charged separately.
– Multi-machine licensing requires a campus or site license.
– Add-ons (NDI, advanced themes, etc.) are extra.
– No permanent free tier with the full feature surface.

Scripture Live:
Offline (Free) — KJV + TWI Bibles, reference + phrase search, custom slides, projector + OBS feed, two themes. Unlimited machines.
Starter — GHS 200/month — 1 machine, 1 worship remote, 6 cloud paraphrase hours/month, KJV + TWI + NIV, 1 custom theme, 30-day session history, full feature set.
Team — GHS 400/month — 3 machines, 3 worship remotes, 18 cloud hours pooled, every translation we license (currently 13: KJV, TWI, NIV, AMP, ASV, BSB, ESV, MSG, NET, NKJV, NLT, RSV, TPT), unlimited custom themes, 6-month session history.
Church — GHS 800/month — 6 machines, unlimited worship remotes, 40 cloud hours pooled, every translation, unlimited themes, unlimited session history, phone support and onboarding call.
– Yearly billing across tiers is 10× monthly (two months free).

The comparison isn’t apples-to-apples. ProPresenter is a one-time purchase plus paid upgrades; Scripture Live is a subscription that includes ongoing cloud detection costs (transcription and reasoning are metered, real-money services). For a single-machine church that wants slide production and not detection, ProPresenter is cheaper over five years. For a multi-campus streaming team that wants live detection, the Team or Church tier is cheaper than equivalent ProPresenter campus licensing plus the workflow gains.

Who should use which

A simple decision tree.

Pick ProPresenter if:
– You have a large production team running deep multimedia (videos, animated lower thirds, multiple stage displays).
– Your service is heavily produced, with media playback as a central element.
– You’re already on ProPresenter, your operators know it, and the live-detection bottleneck isn’t your biggest pain.
– You don’t stream, or your streaming is a screen mirror of the in-room projection without scripture overlays.

Pick Scripture Live if:
– Your bottleneck is the operator typing scripture references during the sermon.
– You stream services and want clean, broadcast-quality scripture overlays without screen-capture hacks.
– You preach in Twi, mixed Twi/English, or otherwise need African-language Bible support out of the box.
– You’re an African church that needs Mobile Money / Paystack billing, or a smaller church that needs a free tier that genuinely works.
– You’re a multi-campus operation that wants pooled cloud hours and centrally-managed licensing across machines.
– You’re evaluating tools and want to start at zero cost — download the free version and try it on a real Sunday.

Use both if:
– You have a large enough production budget that ProPresenter is already running for media, and you want Scripture Live alongside it for scripture detection. Run ProPresenter on the main production machine for slides and video; run Scripture Live on a second machine pointed at the streaming PC’s audio interface, feeding scripture into your OBS scenes via browser source. Many production teams will find this is the highest-leverage combination.

A note on what we’re not sure about

To be fair to ProPresenter, a few capabilities they may have shipped recently that we want to be direct about not having tested in depth:

  • ProPresenter has a robust scripture module with translation libraries; we haven’t done a side-by-side count of every supported translation. They likely cover more English translations out of the box than we do at Starter.
  • ProPresenter’s NDI output and Pro features may include workflows that approximate browser-source streaming integration. We haven’t validated the exact UX for streaming-team setup.
  • Multi-campus licensing and ProPresenter’s site licensing have changed over the years; the pricing comparison should be verified on their site at the time you’re shopping.

FAQ

Q: Can I run Scripture Live and ProPresenter on the same machine?
Yes. They’re independent processes. Most production teams running both will use a second machine for Scripture Live to avoid CPU contention with ProPresenter’s media playback, but it’s not a hard requirement.

Q: Does Scripture Live replace ProPresenter for worship lyrics?
For straightforward lyrics with theme-driven typography, yes. For animated lyrics, lower thirds, and complex slide layouts, ProPresenter is more powerful.

Q: Is Scripture Live cheaper than ProPresenter long-term?
It depends. ProPresenter’s lifetime license is cheaper per-machine than five years of Scripture Live’s Starter subscription. But Scripture Live includes cloud detection costs (transcription and reasoning are metered services), and the multi-machine pricing at the Team and Church tier is competitive with multi-machine ProPresenter licensing.

Q: I’m in the US. Should I still consider Scripture Live?
Yes — especially if you stream and your bottleneck is operator reaction time during sermons. The live detection feature is the same in any country. Pricing is in GHS but cards work fine internationally; we’ll be adding USD billing in due course.

Q: Can I demo Scripture Live without committing?
Yes. The free tier (Offline Mode) is permanent and includes most of the feature surface other than live detection. Download it, run a service on it, and decide from there.
