Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol — better known as MCP — has crossed 97 million installs as of March 2026, according to industry tracking data. That makes MCP the fastest-growing AI standard of the year, and a rare example of a foundational protocol being adopted by every major AI provider almost simultaneously.
What MCP Does
MCP is an open protocol that lets AI models connect safely and uniformly to external data sources, tools and services. Instead of every application building custom integrations for each AI model, MCP provides a common language for “tool use” — letting a Claude model, a GPT model or a Gemini model plug into the same ecosystem of services.
Universal Adoption
OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and dozens of smaller AI startups now ship MCP-compatible tooling. This universality is unusual in the AI world, where proprietary APIs are the norm. Anthropic released MCP as an open specification in late 2024, and the momentum has accelerated throughout 2025 and early 2026.
Why It Matters
The 97-million-install milestone signals that MCP has moved beyond early adopters into mainstream deployment. For developers, MCP means less integration work. For users, it means AI assistants that can reliably reach into their calendars, file systems, databases and business tools. Analysts describe MCP as “the HTTP of AI” — a neutral plumbing layer that enables the broader ecosystem to thrive.
