Trade Ministry Holds Emergency Talks to Halt Ghana’s Sachet Water Price Hike

Ghana’s Ministry of Trade and Industry is holding emergency talks on Tuesday, April 8, 2026, with sachet water producers after intervening to prevent a planned price increase that had been scheduled to take effect this week.

What Was Planned

The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, which represents sachet water producers, had announced plans to raise the retail price of a 30-sachet bag of drinking water to GH¢15. The association cited a global polymer shortage — the raw material used in sachet water packaging — which has been exacerbated by supply chain disruptions linked to the ongoing Iran-Gulf conflict.

Government Steps In

The Ministry of Trade and Industry stepped in to halt the price hike before it could take effect, citing the potential impact on consumers, particularly low-income households for whom sachet water is the primary source of drinking water.

Trade Minister Florence Yeboah-Adjei confirmed that urgent discussions were underway with producers to find a middle-ground solution that accounts for rising input costs without placing an undue burden on Ghanaian families.

Polymer Supply Chain Under Pressure

The global polymer market has tightened significantly in 2026, with the conflict in the Persian Gulf disrupting petrochemical supply routes. Polyethylene — the key material in sachet water packaging — is derived from petrochemical feedstock, and disruptions to Hormuz traffic have pushed raw material prices higher across multiple industries.

Sachet water is a critical public health resource in Ghana, consumed by millions daily. A sharp price increase risks reducing access to clean drinking water for vulnerable communities.
