Mahama Announces Amnesty for 1,000 Inmates After Nsawam Prison Worship Visit

President John Dramani Mahama has announced amnesty for 1,000 prison inmates as part of activities marking Ghana’s Republic Day on 1 July 2026. The announcement followed a working visit to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison on Saturday 25 April, where the President worshipped with inmates and toured ongoing facility projects.

Constitutional Prerogative of Mercy

The amnesty draws on the President’s constitutional prerogative of mercy and is intended to ease congestion in Ghana’s overcrowded prisons while offering selected inmates a second chance. Last year, Mahama pardoned 998 inmates under the same provision.

Inside the Visit

The event was organised in collaboration with the Men’s Ministry of the Assemblies of God Church and featured worship, prayer and messages of hope for inmates. The President toured a 5,000-layer poultry farm and an 800-capacity remand block aimed at easing congestion.

Donations to Inmate Welfare

  • 250 bags of rice
  • 50 bags of maize
  • 50 bags of gari
  • 50 bags of sugar
  • 30 gallons of cooking oil
  • 50 cartons of tomato paste, 50 cartons of spaghetti, 50 boxes of sardines

The President was given a rousing welcome by inmates at the facility. Mahama also pledged broader reforms to rehabilitation programmes and skills training across the Ghana Prisons Service.
