Toyota Motor Corporation and its mobility-innovation subsidiary Woven by Toyota have unveiled a cluster of new AI technologies at Woven City, describing them as the backbone of the company’s Kakezan — “multiplication” — philosophy for combining diverse strengths across industries.
The Woven City AI Vision Engine
The centrepiece is the Woven City AI Vision Engine, a foundational visual AI model that currently ranks among the world’s leading Vision Language Models on the MVBench leaderboard. The engine combines visual, behavioural and environmental data from camera feeds, mobility systems and user inputs to identify patterns, detect risks and enable coordinated action across connected systems. It is currently in proof-of-concept testing with UCC Japan Co., Ltd.
The Integrated ANZEN System
Toyota also introduced ANZEN — Japanese for “safety” — an integrated system that layers the AI Vision Engine with Woven City Behavior AI and Woven City Drive Sync Assist. The combined stack reads behavioural patterns, predicts human movement, and provides driving assistance from both vehicle and traffic-signal camera feeds. The pitch: safety for pedestrians and drivers, not just the lab demo version of autonomy.
Akio Toyoda AI
The most striking personal announcement came from chairman Akio Toyoda, who confirmed he has contributed to an AI model that reflects his own approach to leadership and decision-making. Internally called “Akio Toyoda AI,” the model is intended to promote AI adoption and encourage collaborative work across the Toyota Group — effectively making the chairman’s decision-style available as a consultable voice alongside human leadership.
Woven City Status
Woven City officially launched in September 2025. It currently houses roughly 100 residents, known as Weavers. The Inventor Garage, where these new technologies are being prototyped and tested, began operations in April 2026 and includes accommodation for innovators. The final pitch for the Toyota Woven City Challenge accelerator programme ran on Thursday, April 23.
