CAF President Patrice Motsepe has flown to Dakar, Senegal, for emergency crisis talks on Tuesday, April 8, 2026, following a controversial ruling last month that stripped the Teranga Lions of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco.
The Ruling That Sparked Outrage
In March 2026, the CAF Disciplinary Board ruled that Senegal had fielded an ineligible player during the 2025 AFCON final — a match Senegal had won against Morocco — and stripped the Teranga Lions of the title. The ruling awarded the championship to Morocco, the defeated finalists, triggering immediate and widespread condemnation across West Africa.
Senegal’s Response
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) filed an urgent appeal against the decision and has called on the CAF Executive Committee to convene an emergency session. Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has reportedly spoken directly with Motsepe, demanding that the matter be reviewed at the highest level.
Protests have been held outside the FSF headquarters in Dakar, with supporters demanding the title be returned to the Teranga Lions.
Motsepe’s Emergency Visit
CAF President Patrice Motsepe’s decision to travel to Dakar personally underscores the severity of the political and diplomatic pressure the confederation is facing. Motsepe is expected to hold talks with FSF President Augustin Senghor and Senegalese government officials.
The crisis threatens to overshadow preparations for the 2026 AFCON tournament and has exposed deep tensions within African football governance.
