WNBA Draft 2026: Dallas Wings Hold Top Pick Monday as League Records Viewership High

The 2026 WNBA Draft takes place on Monday evening, April 13, with the Dallas Wings holding the first overall pick. This year’s draft arrives on a wave of unprecedented women’s basketball attention — the NCAA Women’s Championship Game averaged 18.3 million viewers, the most for any basketball game outside the NBA Finals in the past seven years.

Why This Draft Matters

The incoming class is being called the deepest since 2024. Scouts project at least eight players in the first round who could start immediately in the WNBA, a significant jump from typical years where only three or four first-round picks see starting minutes in their rookie seasons. League expansion — with a new Philadelphia franchise tipping off in 2026 and a Toronto expansion franchise announced for 2027 — is driving roster churn and creating real minutes for rookies.

The Top Three

Dallas is expected to take the consensus No. 1 prospect with the top pick, followed by the Los Angeles Sparks and the Chicago Sky. League sources say the Wings have done “almost everything but sign the paperwork” on their selection, with the last holdout being medical clearance from a preseason ankle sprain.

A Marketing Moment for the League

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has framed the 2026 draft as a pivot point for the WNBA’s commercial story. Media rights negotiations opening this summer will be heavily influenced by how this draft class converts into jersey sales and TV audiences. The draft airs on ESPN from 7:30 p.m. ET Monday.
