Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 400,000 vehicles because their windshield wiper arms can break during normal use, drastically reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on April 11, 2026.
What Went Wrong
Ford engineers identified a manufacturing defect in the metal alloy used for certain windshield wiper arms. Under stress — particularly in heavy rain, snow or high-speed driving — the arms can fracture, leaving drivers with partial or no visibility through the windshield. NHTSA classified the defect as safety-critical after multiple incidents were reported in the field.
Which Vehicles Are Affected
The recall covers several recent model years across multiple Ford vehicle lines. Owners will receive notification letters directly from Ford with instructions to bring their vehicles to authorised dealerships. Ford has committed to replacing the faulty wiper arms free of charge, with repairs expected to begin immediately.
A Pattern of Recalls
This is the latest in a series of high-volume recalls for Ford, which has struggled with quality control issues across several of its platforms in recent years. Analysts say the string of recalls is weighing on Ford’s brand perception at a critical moment, as the company also navigates the EV transition and rising raw material costs. Investors will be watching how aggressively Ford moves to contain both the safety and reputational fallout.
