The official torch for the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games was lit on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Teotihuacán archaeological park in Mexico City, marking the start of the torch relay toward the host city of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.
A Symbolic Start
The torch-lighting ceremony featured a troupe of cultural dancers performing traditional pieces against the backdrop of the Pyramid of the Sun, one of the most recognisable archaeological sites in the Americas. Organisers chose Teotihuacán to honour the region’s shared indigenous heritage and to root the Games firmly in Latin American history.
The Torch Relay Route
From Mexico City, the flame will travel through multiple Central American and Caribbean nations before arriving in Santo Domingo for the opening ceremony. Each stop along the route will feature community events and athlete meet-and-greets. The relay is designed to build momentum and regional unity ahead of the Games proper.
Why It Matters
The Central American and Caribbean Games are the oldest regional multi-sport event in the Americas and a critical stepping stone for athletes targeting the Pan American Games and eventually the Olympics. Santo Domingo 2026 will welcome thousands of athletes from more than 30 nations competing in dozens of disciplines. For the Dominican Republic, hosting is a major sporting and diplomatic milestone.
