Ghana’s Black Stars have been drawn in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face England, Croatia and Panama. The draw marks Ghana’s return to football’s biggest stage after a disappointing cycle that included the heartbreak of failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Kurt Okraku’s Verdict
Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku described the draw as a true test of the Black Stars’ strength. “Qualifying for the World Cup after missing out on AFCON 2025 shows the inner fortitude of this team,” Okraku said. “Group L is tough, but we embrace it. Ghana will field its best players and give Ghanaians reasons to be proud.”
The Opponents
England arrive as one of the pre-tournament favourites. Croatia remain a tactical powerhouse with a deep midfield. Panama will bring resilience and physicality in what looks like a classic CONCACAF spoiler role. Progression from the group will require Ghana to be at their sharpest from the first whistle.
Preparations Already Underway
Head coach Otto Addo is expected to lead the squad into a series of high-intensity friendlies ahead of the tournament, including matches against Austria and Germany. Okraku confirmed that the final squad selection will prioritise form over reputation, with multiple Europe-based Ghanaian players in contention. The Black Stars’ return to the World Cup is already being called Ghana’s biggest footballing moment of the decade.
