JD Vance Heads to Islamabad for High-Stakes Iran Ceasefire Negotiations

US Vice President JD Vance is leading the American delegation to Islamabad, Pakistan, for high-stakes negotiations aimed at cementing the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran — even as Israel’s continued airstrikes on Lebanon threw the entire diplomatic effort into question on Thursday.

A Whirlwind Diplomacy

Vance had been in Hungary for separate diplomatic meetings before returning to Washington overnight. Within hours, he was back on a flight to Islamabad, underscoring the urgency Washington attaches to salvaging the ceasefire. The talks in Pakistan are designed to translate the broad ceasefire framework into a durable agreement — covering sanctions relief, Iranian nuclear commitments, and regional security guarantees.

Iran’s Demands Remain a Sticking Point

Iran’s security council has continued to press for full financial compensation for wartime damages and the complete lifting of international sanctions as preconditions for a lasting peace. The White House responded sharply: Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Iran’s 10-point proposal had been “literally thrown in the garbage by President Trump.” The gap between the two sides’ positions remains significant.

Lebanon as a Complicating Factor

The biggest complication facing Vance in Islamabad is Israel. Iran’s President Pezeshkian has explicitly warned that “Israeli strikes on Lebanon violate the ceasefire agreement” and will render negotiations meaningless if they continue. Whether the US can convince Israel to pause its Lebanon campaign while simultaneously holding Iran at the table is the defining diplomatic challenge of the moment.
