Konnor Griffin, 19, Signs Historic $140M Deal With Pittsburgh Pirates — Largest in Club History

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed teenage shortstop Konnor Griffin to a landmark 9-year, $140 million contract extension — the largest deal in the club’s history — just five days after the 19-year-old made his major league debut. The agreement, which runs through 2034, signals an unprecedented level of confidence from Pittsburgh’s front office in a player widely regarded as a generational talent.

A Debut for the History Books

Griffin made his MLB debut on April 4, 2026, hitting an RBI double in his very first plate appearance — making him the youngest Pittsburgh Pirate to record a hit in his debut since Bill Mazeroski in 1956. He was also the first teenage position player to debut in the major leagues since Juan Soto in 2018. The crowd at PNC Park gave him a standing ovation.

Contract Details

The nine-year deal is worth a guaranteed $140 million, with potential escalators that could push the total value to $150 million. The contract includes a $12 million signing bonus — $5 million in 2026 and $3.5 million each in 2027 and 2028. The extension buys out three potential years of free agency, locking Griffin in Pittsburgh through 2034 at the latest.

The deal surpasses the previous franchise record — Bryan Reynolds’ $106.75 million extension from 2023 — and also eclipses the Seattle Mariners’ recent 8-year, $95 million deal with shortstop Colt Emerson signed pre-debut in April 2026.

Who Is Konnor Griffin?

Griffin was selected 9th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft from Jackson Prep in Mississippi. A Mississippi native, he was named Gatorade National Player of the Year in high school and Baseball America’s minor league player of the year in 2025, after posting a remarkable .333 batting average with 21 home runs and 65 stolen bases across three minor league levels in a single season.

Standing at 6’3″ with elite athleticism and a switch-hitting profile, Griffin is described by scouts throughout the industry as a “franchise-level talent” — a rare combination of power, speed, and defensive ability at a premium position.

“Pumped to Be a Pirate”

“I’m just pumped to be a Pirate and be a part of this wonderful clubhouse,” Griffin said following the signing, expressing enthusiasm for the long-term commitment. Pirates general manager Derek Shelton called the signing “the most important moment in the franchise’s recent history,” pointing to Griffin as the cornerstone of a sustained rebuild in Pittsburgh.
