Iran’s IRGC Seizes MSC Francesca and Epaminondas in Hormuz; 15 Filipino Sailors Held Safe

Iran has dramatically raised the stakes in the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has seized two foreign container ships transiting the strait — the Panama-flagged MSC Francesca and the Liberia-flagged Epaminondas. The vessels were forcibly taken to an Iranian port.

Stated Reasons

The IRGC Navy Command accused both vessels of “endangering maritime security by operating without the required authorization and tampering with navigation systems.” It claimed the Francesca was linked to Israel, without providing supporting evidence. Both shipowners reject the allegations.

15 Filipino Seafarers Safe

A Philippine government agency confirmed that 15 Filipino seafarers on board the two ships are “safe and unharmed” — 10 on the Epaminondas and 5 on the MSC Francesca.

Tit-for-Tat Interdictions

  • The seizures form part of a tit-for-tat series of ship interdictions stretching from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.
  • U.S. forces have also boarded Iran-linked vessels this week.
  • The International Chamber of Shipping has said captures by both sides violate international law.
  • Panama formally condemned the seizure of MSC Francesca and demanded immediate release.

Authenticity Questions

Iran has released video of masked IRGC commandos boarding the Francesca. CNN-consulted experts noted the boarding hatch appeared already open before the boarders arrived, suggesting parts of the footage may be staged for propaganda.
